It is no longer news that contactless payments have seen a tremendous acceleration during the Covid-19 pandemic. People around the world have quickly adapted to this way of payment and will continue to use this method going forward.

This is great news, yet it makes you wonder since if you exceed the contactless limit – currently at Euros 50, you still have to enter your Pin at checkout.

The Covid-19 pandemic has fanned public concerns that the coronavirus could be transmitted by cash, but scientific evidence suggests that the probability of transmission via banknotes is low when compared with other frequently-touched objects, such as credit card terminals or PIN pads, as the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) says in a bulletin (no3 3 April 2020).

In fact, Finnish researchers in 2018 collected surface and air samples at a major airport and tested them for viruses. They took ninety swab samples from frequently touched surfaces such as handrails, luggage trays at the security check area, toilet flushing buttons and doorknobs.

Most surfaces did not have any viruses, and even all 14 samples from the airport toilets came out sparkling clean. However, there was one surface testing positive for both rhinovirus and a coronavirus: the buttons of the payment terminal at the pharmacy.

So, imagine if the customer can enter his pin on his own device at checkout, even for in-store transactions, taking away the concern of touching a ‘foreign’ pin-pad. WIZZIT Tap2Pay Solutions facilitates this exact use case with the ability to push the pin entry related to a (contactless) card payment transaction to the customer’s device. With the additional benefit that the customer does not need to download any APP to enjoy this service, simply by use of IM channels the customer can confirm payment by PIN entry on his own device (android and IOS).
